Well although we do not run a marathon, the 26mile Fibark downriver race is just as crazy and n many ways just as painful... It also seems that there exist in the paddling world many people who seem to have no issue with waking up one morning and subjecting themselves to this grueling race without training or preparing save hydrating, and carboloading with a few bears the night before. I for some strange reason happen to be one of these strangely psychotic people. But be as that may, I take my hat off to all of you who make the 26 mile race such a blast and such an absolutely grueling event.

AS for the rest of the FibArk festival, well it is something that should never be missed. Everything from the hooligan race to a wonderfully attended slalom race, the music the entertainment and the camaraderie is something that we of the paddler tribe look forward to each and every year. This is not to say that the experience is all together an ease one. from 60mph wind that allow for the collection of dust on everything you own to the sweltering heat and long days spent doing crazy things, it is most certainly an epic event and an epic undertaking if one is to fully participate. It is wonderful it is strange, it is without doubt organized, and about first and foremost the paddling lifestyle and that is why we love it so much! Thank GOD it is over and we can recover for a year before we take the wonderful and epic journey that is the FibArk Experience!

The Wheels Keep Turning.

So it has been just over a week since the conclusion of the 2008 US Olympic Trials, and things have calmed down to a certain degree. It is always interesting after trials when you take a small break from training every day. I often find that I have so much time on my hands, and nothing to fill it with, that I just end up sleeping a lot. This may seem like a welcome restbite for a lot of people, but sleeping a lot and not working out defiantly does funky things to my body, and makes it hard to get a good night sleep.
I was defiantly in a state of limbo after Trials finished up, what with getting sick and not performing as well as I had hoped, the results and what it means for the months ahead are drastically different than I had pictured in my head. To start with it means spending a lot more time at home this summer, and frankly I am not quite sure how I feel about that. For the last eight years or so, it has been summers full of travels, and road trips, long months spent in tents beside rivers and in the company of other paddlers. I guess it will be good to be home for a little while, and the great thing about this short time off from training is that I have been able to figure out some things I can do to pass the time when I am not in the boat this summer, all of which should be both fun and educational.
I am still not sure if we are going to go to the Pre Worlds in Spain, part of me really wants to go, and part of me really doesn't want to spend the crazy amount of money that travel is requiring of this Oil loving world, so I guess that one we will play that one by ear. I am headed home this coming friday, and with luck I will make it back in time to catch the last race in the High School championship series and in time to coach some of the new slalom kids that CO invariably produces, until then it is just getting packed up, moved out and studying for one last final.
Cheers!
Nic

Now that it's Over

Well after 3 days of intense racing, with a lot of ups and downs in all the different aspects of the competition, I'm exhausted and ready to take a short break before starting my training for the rest of this year, as well as the year to come (it's never to early to start training for another year, and next years trials in my eyes). As a whole I feel alright about my own personal performance, as there were certainly some very good aspects, and some aspects that could use a good deal of work. I had a few spectacular sections and moves, but it was so hard for me to put together a full day of really solid boating, and this is going to be one of my largest focuses in the upcoming year, putting together two solid runs. On the other hand though, I had a good deal of large mistakes, that were all very costly, and I had a tough time moving past them mid-run, so thats another thing I'll be working on.

Throughout the rest of the competition though there were a lot of ups and downs for everyone, and it was most definitely a nail biter finish to the whole thing. Going into the final run on the last day of competition the top six boaters were within one second of each other with the top three boaters with in 1/10 of a second, and nothing had really been decided concerning the team in the first two days, so there was a lot riding on that final run. The spot check also seemed to give a lot of people trouble, causing JP Griffith to get disqualified, as well as several prominent Canadians, causing them to loose potential Olympic spots in the process.

Well that's that, and it was a good couple days of really hard racing, and I look forward to next years trials where I hope to do much better, as well as taking this past weekends racing experience to heart, using it to my advantage as much as possible.

So till next time,

best wishes and training,

Dodge

In the think of it!

After months and months of training and preparation it's finally here. This week has been good, we've all had a very good week of training here in Charlotte, and are doing our best not to train as hard as I know we all really want to. However I can feel the tension rising as the day approaches. Everyone around the course is slowly getting a bit harder to approach and the joking is slowly becoming less and less frequent as we all start to crawl out of our skin. I'm doing my personal best to keep the mood more or less stress free and joke with everyone, even though sometimes its met with a harsh backlash its always worth the try. Having all of the set up crews around too, putting up the tents and speaker system is certainly not helping me either. Having all of the speakers scream "testing, testing, testing 1 2" as you round the corner into big drop, is certainly distracting to me. On the other hand though its probably good for me to experience this during training before everything gets under way. With only a day and a half left before the racing begins and roughly 5000 tickets sold I'm certainly feeling the tension too, and certainly starting to get some serious butterfly effect going on in my stomach. I'll do my best to keep everyone updated as the days progress though, it'll probably be some good venting.

Till next time,

Dodge

TRIALS 2008

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_02zPIXx_oz4/SAs7dU0E1fI/AAAAAAAAABA/PzGqIAA3c3o/s320/20061106_090001_ExCover110706_300.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5191308370464003570" />
Well, It is that time of year once again, and it looks like it is going to be one hell of a party. With literally everyone and their mothers coming to Charlotte this week, the 2008 US Olympic Trials for Whitewater Slalom should be a bast. Of course it is a whole lot more fun and less stressful on those people who get to come and enjoy the race, as compared to the athletes, but it is going to be great fun all around. Dodge and I arrived in Charlotte yesterday. After a series of car breakdowns, Dodge's car no longer starts, and apparently it is impossible to get anyone to work on a car on the weekend in Gettysburg. So with we loaded up the Volvo, and headed back to what has become for me, almost a second home.
After arrival we jumped out for a quick session on the water, which was excellent, and a great way to get loosened up again after the 6.5hr car ride. After that it was off to the airport to pick up Sarah Dodge and then our traditional Red Bowl sushi haunt for dinner.
Today will see the arrival of Mark, and a bunch of people from the front range. I am very excited to see everyone and catch up, as well as to take pictures of the inevitable working that will take place on the course. We Will keep you posted on how the week is going as it unfolds!
Cheers!

A Letter From The US Olympians Association

April 11, 2008

As President of the U.S. Olympians Association, I oppose any attempt to boycott the Olympic Games in Beijing and thereby single out athletes to pay the price for the political agendas of others. Frankly, I am a victim of a boycott and know first hand how painful it is to have my hopes and dreams plucked from my heart because of political pressures outside my control. I am sure that those Olympians affected by the 1980 and 1984 Boycotts share similar sentiments.

I believe it is the responsibility of every Olympian to protect the rights of all accredited athletes to compete in the Olympic Games. Athletes do not participate in the Olympic Games as warriors, politicians nor activists. They are, and should be, athletes exercising their God given talent to compete on the world’s greatest stage. We who have gone before this new generation of gifted talent pledged to compete “in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honor of our teams”. That Olympic Oath continues today and gives us the basis for becoming Olympians. There is no political or social message in that Oath. All we did and all we can expect from every competitor, is to compete fairly for the glory and honor of sport.

Our athletes deserve to compete in these Games and to represent our country. The time to influence the politics of China was 7 years ago when China bid for the Olympic Games. While others may chose to debate whether the Olympic Games will have a political effect on China that is not the athlete’s focus. There are many organizations that are engaged in efforts to affect change in China. If anyone sincerely feels compelled to send a message to the Chinese government, please direct your attention and send your donations to these groups. But, let’s take athletes out of the socio-political arena and keep them in the sporting arena where they belong.

The future of the Olympic Games is hanging in the balance. Every Olympian is inextricably tied to the Olympic Movement. It is our duty as Olympians to protect the stature of the Games, defend the honor of sport and protect the sanctity of the Olympic Creed. I will not naively turn my back to abuses that are the province of politics but I will not let people who do not share my Olympic family tie twist the meaning of the Olympic Games to suit their political or social agendas. The 2008 Olympic Games must go on and they will. They will because Olympians, as guardians of the Games, carriers of the Torch, and keepers of the faith will not yield to those who wish to prevent the youth of the world from competing with dignity beside their brothers and sisters in sport.

Sincerely,
Willie Banks
President
U.S. Olympians

Arttastic Craziness!

Well I had good news this week. After spending a whole lot of time and energy getting art work done for the Juried student show here at the Gettysburg college gallery, I discovered that all three of the works that I entered had been accepted, which was really cool. The opening was also very cool. It is amazing how much work shows up that you have never seen before, or that you had seen other people working on in various stages. All in all it was just a good way to have all of that work rewarded.
As for the rest of things, well I am not sure that it can get much crazier than it is at the moment. with Olympic Trials in two weeks from today, it is really crunch time, although if it hasn't been accomplished by now, chances are that it is too late. I am looking forward to the event, which promises to be spectacular. Fingers crossed that we have a good weekend of weather. Between training and the last three weeks of school, things are defiantly getting a little hectic, and I am actually looking forward to the week of training before Trials as a little bit of a break in the grind.

Other than that things are going well. Dodge and I went on a crazy run yesterday, which was great, but like I said a little crazy! Any we finally seem to be getting to real spring, although the days have been gray with the exception of a spectacular day yesterday, it is getting warmer, and feeling like it is almost time to run off into the world of summer! We will keep you posted on developments, especially during Trials!

Cheers!

Nic

Hey Everyone!!
SO.. this is my first blog! finally! Probably a lot of you know I got a concussion a few weeks ago at Nantahala/Charlotte, and it turned out to be pretty serious. I was pretty under-the-weather for quite some time. I got what the doc called a secondary impact concussion, which means I hit my head and got a minor concussion(thanks to big drop, which is now officially my least favorite drop to paddle-hopefully this will change...eeek), and then hit my head again(thanks to my lack of a boof stroke at Nantahala Falls-during a race run, may I add), and got a much more severe concussion. Turns out hitting your head that much isn't very good for you...who knew?? Anyways, it really is a bummer because, according to my doctor and athletic trainers, after a concussion like mine, you have to wait until you don't have any symptoms at all(headaches, nausea, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, light sensitivity...), which took me 12 pretty miserable days, and then you have to wait another 7 days(symptom free) before you can start exercising at all again, and if all goes well, you can start doing what they consider "contact sports" another 7 days after that!! As of right now, I can start exercising(non-contact stuff) on Tuesday, HOORAY! and then hopefully I can get back out on the field and back in a boat the following Tuesday. Now the most unfortunate part about all of this is that I have two field hockey tournaments, one next weekend and one the weekend after, and then of course the U.S. team trials/PanAm's the next weekend. So, I won't be able to play in my first tournament, but hopefully I'll be good to go for the second one. I also decided that it is probably not the smartest idea to try to race at trials. This was an incredibly tough decision, but I don't want to rush myself back into it since my confidence is a little crushed, and especially not in such a stressful, pressure filled racing environment as team trials during an Olympic year. I don't think I can even begin to explain how bummed I am. Racing at team trials this spring was a big goal for me, and not reaching goals that you make for yourself really just sucks. BUT. . . there is a moral to this story. It has been really hard on me mentally not being able to exercise at all this last week few weeks, I can't even remember the last time I didn't do any form of exercise for two weeks straight, in fact I don't think I ever have. But it made me realize how much I was taking my healthy, athletic status for granted. That cliche line about how "you don't know what you have until it's gone" is very fitting. So a word of advice so you don't end up missing out on a whole bunch of opportunities to train and compete like I am, TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND YOUR BODY, DON'T TAKE YOUR HEALTH FOR GRANTED, AND DON'T BE AFRAID TO TAKE IT EASY EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE. All athletes' bodies need recovery time, so if your hurting, let yourself heal before you jump back out there, trust me your body will thank you. Not to mention you will safe yourself a lot of time if you take one or even two days off if your hurting, rather than 3 weeks or more if you get injured. And another thing, DON'T FORGET HOW MUCH YOU CAN LEARN BY WATCHING OTHER PEOPLE. I've done A LOT of watching from the sideline these last couple weeks, and can't believe how much I've learned, its incredible. I'm aching to get back out there and put all this new-found knowledge into action. And one last thing, DON'T BE AFRAID, CONFIDENCE AND CALMNESS ARE GOOD FRIENDS TO HAVE OUT THERE. A little bit of confidence combined with some respect for the feature can go along way, and a peaceful state of mind in the midst of chaos, nothing compares....
So there you go a blog from Mariah, unfortunate topic, I wish I could tell you how wonderful my training is going instead, but hey, you got to take things as they come, and make the best of your situation, and learn from your mistakes, and live in the moment, and all that...
so till next time, peace be with you!
Mariah

Dickerson Race!

Well, I have to say that the Dickerson was a very interesting and a good race. It is always interesting to see just how much people underestimate the water at Dickerson and as such there were more touches than I have seen in a long time.
The course was a breath of fresh air, in that it was very ease and flowed amazingly well. However despite that, people were defiantly trying to race the course too much and were trying to cut lines with some entertaining consequences. As for us in the C2... We had two really good solid runs, and were extremely consistent, if a little slow, but we did a great job of being on line the whole time and the flow of our runs were very good. It was defiantly nice to have a chance to just run a relatively brainless race.

The only thing that is a big pain at Dickerson is the lack of warmup space, which makes it hard to feel good about starting your run. Never the less their very informal start was really nice because it allowed you to begin your run when you were ready and facing any direction. All in all it was a good race, despite the cold. Now with a few weekends of much needed normalice and no travel, we are just going to sit back and flow on through Trials. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in Charlotte!

Reflection

I think that there comes a point in every year, when it is a good idea to stop for a moment and reflect on everything that has been accomplished and to remember why we do what we do. When we were at the US Open in NC, there were a number of instances that made me reflect, but in general, this is just one of those things that pops into my head and has no place and no benefit unless I do something with it.

For those of us who are intimately familiar with the lifestyle of the athlete, we know how hard it can be to balance everything that there has to be in life, and still strive for our athletic goals. This year, being an Olympic year is no exception and in many cases makes life all the harder because everything is cranked up a notch. Both the great and unfortunate thing about sport is the people participate in it for various reasons, and in many cases, those reasons make it all the harder to balance their lives. It is important as athletes to stop and take a minuet to think about why we are involved in sport, and if their energies are all going in positive directions. For those like me, writing is a great way to focus my thoughts and get them out of my head, as well as a way to remind myself why it is that I do what I do.

The honest truth is that I do this sport because I love it, and I have a passion for everything about it… Love and passion, I can’t think of two more powerful words and yet two words that provide such a dismal lack of insight and information. I guess that is the point though. We use words such as love and passion for those things that other more articulate grammatical devices are completely inadequate of describing. So I love this sport and have had a passion for it ever since my first day on “The pond of Dreams” when I was placed in a wildwater boat and became immediately acquainted with not only the fish, but also the two-foot thick layer of goose shit that coats the bottom of the pond… And yes, I even loved those early morning training sessions where we had to break through the ice to get to the water. While in many cases the initial moments and experiences such as those were most certainly unpleasant, they provided me with memories, perspective, and companionship that I will cherish to the end of my days.

Many people seem to be so limited by the every day routine of training, racing, work. School, relationships, etc that they forget to look at the whole picture… Of where they have come from and just how much progress and how many good times they have had along the way… It is the along the way part that is important, not the medals, the Olympic Trials, the making of the National Team. Those may be highlights along the road that we know and love so much, but the value and the passion that we feel for this sport is not the result of those highlights, but of the road that we have traveled to wonderful places and in the company of good friends.

Regardless of how much progress you have made as an athlete, regardless if you make that National or Olympic Team, the only thing that you will have when it is all said and done are the memories of the journey, and the transformation that you have undergone. Believe me, it is worth far more than any medal draped around your neck, and any accomplishment that you could come up with… and I LOVE MDALS… As an athlete, I of course understand, maybe better than most just how frustrating the present can be, and just how hopeless you can feel if you are stuck on a seemingly endless plateau on your long climb to excellence. All athletes experience this, and it is important to understand and appreciate even the longest plateau as just another opportunity to do more of what you love. When you are invariably stuck on that plateau, just remember all that which has lead to that point, and all of the potential that extends from it. That combined with the use of positive energy in positive directions will, I assure you make the long plateau seem like nothing more than a nice place to stop for a picture and a bite to eat.

Train Smart, live well, and always remember that you and you alone determine the value of your existence!

Cheers!
  Nic Borst

US Open, and Hobbes

This past weekend we had the US Open down at NOC in western NC, it was a good race for some and a not so good race for others. For Mariah it was a really bad race, as she flipped really hard upstream in the falls, and got a pretty bad concussion unfortunately, so she won't be able to boat for quite some time. It was on her first run of the first day as well, which made it hard on her for the rest of the weekend, as she was forced to sit on shore and take some really good pictures (which was both good and bad). But we all want her to take as much time as she needs so that she can fully recover and not hurt herself any more.
For me personally it was a blessing in disguise, as I was able to figure some stuff out that was really good for my boating, concerning both my technique and my mental preparation for race runs. On the other hand though I wasn't able to put together two solid runs either day. On day one I had a very poor start to my first run missing two gates resulting in 100 seconds worth of penalties, but was able to pull it together for the bottom thankfully, as well as having an ok second run on day one. Then on day two after a solid first run with some very good boating for me, I flipped missing a gate and needing to loop two more, so it was a poor finish to a good start.

So on the whole our trip down to NOC wasn't phenomenal by any standards but some of us were able to accomplish some good things.

Then yesterday I spent a remarkably short amount of time in the Dulles Airport just west of DC, picking up my nice new Vajda Gyro (since named "hobbes" for its tiger-esk look, however I'm yet to figure out if this is a good or bad thing, hopefully good). And now that he's all outfitted I can't wait to get on some water and do some boating.

So I'm off, till next time

Dodge

Dickerson Is Back!

After nearly six months of closures, and construction issues, Dickerson is back open!! Although we are all handling it well, I was looking at the calendar today and realized that I am missing 48 of the 106 days that I can be at school. Granted this includes breaks and weekends, be still, that is a lot of days of travel.
Last week was our Spring Break at Gettysburg College, and so we spent ten hard but productive days training and racing at the USNWC in Charlotte. We worked a lot of getting the boat free, and light so that all of the funky water that makes up the course would not effect us as much. Both Mark and I in the C2 and Dodge in the K1 had a really productive week, and I have to say that I am really impressed by how far dodge has come, and just how "Dainty" he is in his boat. That's right Dodge "Dainty" something that you have not been able to achieve up until this point very often, and which will now allow you to jump up a level or two in your boating. This skill is also known as Magic!
Anyway it was a great week of three a day training... 6:00am ball workouts with Cathy fallowed by 9:00 Fulls, and just your usual training camp agenda. Now with this week back at school before heading off for another week of training and racing in the US Open, it is going to be a little crazy, but having a good group of people out here is very helpful. Oh and we also found out officially that Jeff Gette and Rachel Thomas are going to be attending Pen State Mont Alto next year, which isn't too far from us, so we will all be able to train together!
Well that's it for now. We will keep you posted on our travels, developments and race results over the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!
Cheers!
Nic

A good week of training

Over this past week Nic, Mark, and I have been down in Charlotte at the USNWC for a good week of training. It was nice to be off of our gates on the Yellow Breaches, and have some really solid whitewater training on the course we'll be racing on soon. It was also a harsh realization of Nic's that this would be it for us in terms of training on the course, so we were going to have to take full advantage of the time that we had, and we most certainly did. From the early morning physio ball sessions with Cathy, where we worked hard on the sensations created by certain body movements throughout our body, along with general body mobility. As well as early morning fulls in the cold bitter wind of the USNWC, that did an amazing job of getting all of us some race simulation on the course, with moves that are going to be very similar to potential moves at these ever looming trials.
As a whole the training camp that we have just finished up was a very good, and I have certainly learned quite a lot of crucial skills and techniques that will aid me in my quest for a National Team spot. I feel as though I made huge leaps and bounds from the peer coaching, and coaching from Cathy as well. I am deeply saddened as I return to the frigid north training grounds of the Yellow Breaches and the Feeder, and away from the much warmer training facilities that Charlotte, and the surrounding areas have to offer. But I will still be able to continue to develop the skills that I have started to develop during my time down there.

      Peace

      Dodge

End of a CRAZY week

This past week and a bit has been absolutely crazy beyond all belief. It started off a little over a week ago with the drive down to the Glacier Breaker. The drive itself wasn't bad at all, as I didn't drive at all, it was all Mark and Nic. The race itself, was a very good experience for me even though I raced fairly poorly. It was one of those things where I was able to figure out where I was relative to the rest of my competitors, as well as what I need to work on between now and trials in order to improve my performance once trials is reached. We unanimously decided to drive home that night in order to get our weeks work started, and have a nice day of rest after a not so good race for most of us. The next day was sleeping in till 10:00am or so, as we didn't get home till about 1:00am, and didn't get to sleep till 1:45-2:00, and then work all day until 2:00am on Monday morning. This was a really bad thing for me for two reasons, one it started a very bad trend that would last through the end of the school week for me, and then also because waking up at 6:30 to go work out after 4.5 hrs of sleep is really hard.
The rest of the school week only got worse for me, as I didn't get any more sleep on any of the nights, the school work itself continued to get harder and harder, as well as the workouts in the morning getting harder as well. Between Wednesday and Friday I had three exams as well a stack of reading that was way higher than it really should have been, but thats my fault.

In the end, when I got into my car to drive down to Charlotte on Friday afternoon, after finishing up with everything, I was in a very good mood. Leaving the frozen wastelands of Gettysburg PA, and driving on down to the sunny banks of the Charlotte Whitewater Center (USNWC), where hot days, and hard whitewater with good training, would be graciously accepted by me.

I was able to sleep in the next morning before heading off to the course for a little bit of reconnaissance on the course and a race later on. Everything was going smoothly with me until it was time for my first race run; I was all there mentally, ready to go, but when you have a large mess up on the third gate, for me most of that mental preparation goes right out the window (something that I've been working on quite hard for some time as this has been a plague to my racing thus far). The rest of the run was alright, with only marginal little mistakes that I was able to fix, although when I got to "Big Drop," I got a serious smack down, being flipped over very hard, and having a tough time with the finish of the course. My second run was going very well through to "Big Drop," were I once again got pushed into the wrong place and missed a gate. It was a good learning experience though and I will take what I've learned through my training into Olympic Trials in a little under two months.

Day two of racing proved to be on the whole much better than day one in terms of my overall performance, being able to connect everything much better than the day before. However, at the end of my second run I had a very violent flip, and broke my paddle, thankfully it is fixable and will be just like new in a week once I get it back from Sylvan (Galasport Rep. and US Kayak coach).

When all is said and done I am very glad the this all around crazy week, that had its fair share of ups and downs (more downs unfortunately) is over, and I can flow into my week of training down here in Charlotte. Hopefully it will be very good, and I will do my best to keep you updated.

Dodge

Tales Of The Dreaded ERG

So, lately Dodge and I have discovered the joys of the rowing ERG. It was a discovery that we made in response to having to miss practice because of crazy weather conditions such as 20º and 30mph winds. Anyway we have since incorporated it into our regular training routine, and there is nothing quite like showing up to an 8:30am class unable to walk because you just had your but kicked by the ERG. For anyone out there who is looking to spice up their paddling workouts, or make things harder for yourself than they already are, I have two suggestions... First try the workout on a rowing ERG, and or try it on a course where the gates are WAY to narrow! All in all it is not that bad, but it is always fun to do a workout where you feel like you are going to be sick first thing in the morning. This morning was defiantly one of those mornings!
Anyway.... Training is going well, most of the FRPA East crew will be heading down for a ten day intense training camp in Charlotte on Friday, which promises to be a good one with races on each of the weekends we will be down there. Fortunately this will be the last time for a little while that we have to commute to NC. Something that we have been going for the last three weeks. Some people think we are crazy doing about 1,000 miles of driving in a weekend, but it is just normal for us at this point.... Hopefully I can get in to a routine now that we have this blog of updating on a regular basis. In the mean time check out the newly updated FRPA website at www.whitewaterracing.org and the new branch of the FRPA, the FRPA East's website at web.mac.com/nborst I hope everyone this finds everyone well!

Cheers!

Nic

Welcome to our blog. This is the place where you can keep up to date on everything that the FRPA east coast crew is up to. All of our travel, training, and racing experiences will be documented here. We welcome any and all forms of support, so please visit our website at www.whitewaterracing.org.
Cheers!

Nic Borst
